Cristiano
Ronaldo has beaten boxer Floyd Mayweather, golfer Tiger Woods and
fellow footballer Lionel Messi to become the world’s highest-paid
athlete in 2016.
According to Forbes, the Real Madrid man raked in a staggering £70.4million.
It
is the first time the Real Madrid ace has topped the charts, taking the
crown from boxer Floyd Mayweather and moving ahead of Tiger Woods.
It
is also the first time a footballer has become the world’s highest paid
sports star and the first time since 1990 a team player has top the
list which Micheal Jordan did.
The
Portuguese star’s incredible revenue came from the player’s salary –
estimated at a stunning £440k-a-week, his sponsorship endorsements and
bonuses.
The 32-year-old pipped rival Lionel
Messi to first place with the Argentine pocketing £65m for the calendar
year according to Forbes.

The
next footballer to appear on the list is Messi’s Barcelona team-mate
Neymar who was ranked 21st with £30m with Manchester United’s Zlatan
Ibrahimovic earning £29.7m.
